ŠERMUKŠNIS – XX INTERNATIONAL STREET THEATRE FESTIVAL
„At last Klaipėda feels like a Western European city... It was the first time the city enjoyed such a festival... Those were the days and great evenings when children were able to understand adult foreigners and grown-ups took the liberty of becoming children once again. The lights, shapes, incredible sounds, fire and fireworks testified the things that have been promoted by the theatrical culture from the antiquity – love, friendship, and passion…“, – these are just a few quotes from the media descriptions of the previous ŠERMUKŠNIS (Eng. „Rowan“) international street theatre festival that took place in Klaipėda in July 2017.
THE ŠERMUKŠNIS festival, which was launched in 1985 as a festival of chamber performances, has since 2001 spread into the streets and squares of the city. The festival organized by ŽVEJŲ RŪMAI Culture Centre of Klaipėda every two years was continuously developing, growing and expanding until it has become one of the most impressive street theatre events not only within the boundaries of the city but also entire Lithuania.
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of THE ŠERMUKŠNIS international street theatre festival, which will be held on 5 to 7 of July and will undoubtedly gift its audiences with amazing and admirable moments. The programme features the stars of the world’s most famous art festivals: Les Commandos Percu (France), Ondadurto Teatro (Italy), Pantomime theatre Mimo (Poland), Compagnie Bilbobasso (France), Mr. Pejo’s Wandering Dolls (Russian Federation), Bram Graafland (The Netherlands), Adrian Schvarzstein (Spain) and St. Genesius troup (Lithuania), La Industrial Teatrera (Spain), Daan Mathot (The Netherlands), Šarka – Milašius – Mockūnas – Naujokaitis (Lithuania) and others.
Events of the festival will take place at the Theatre Square, Klaipėda Castle Site and Karlskrona Square.
All events are free of charge.
The project is supported by the Lithuanian Council of Culture.
