Theatre Square

Theatre Square is the heart of Klaipėda. It is a very popular meeting place for Klaipėda residents and visitors. The theatre square is like a magnet that attracts people. It hosts concerts, the Sea Festival and other events.
In 1819 the New Market was opened after part of the castle’s moats were flooded. The square was occupied by butchers’ huts. In 1860 After the demolition, a market hall was built on the outskirts of the New Market. A fish market operated next to it and the castle moats. Fishermen would bring their fish to the market via the lagoon and sell them directly from their boats or in a special area of the hall. The masts of the boats, decorated with colourful weathervanes, brightened up the marketplace. When the New Market was established, the current Theatre Square was located between the two market squares and later merged with them to become a market square. This is how in the first half of the 19th century, Market Street, Theatre Square, and the New Market formed a long marketplace stretching from St John’s Church to the castle. During the market season, the whole area was flooded with carts, huts, amusement rides, and tents of money lures. When the squares were no longer used by traders, the beginning of Sukilėlių Street was also used for trading.
The square was built only in the 19th century. It is said that as early as the 17th century various plays were performed in the theatre square by passing actors;
